Why do you make art?
I am an artist who is using my lived experiences to create work. No matter what stage of life I'm in, my work reflects my current state. Where I'm at, where I've been, what I maybe haven't healed from, and where I want to go. As I grow, I have wanted every time I click the shutter to feel intentional. To think before acting. Not just shooting because I can. To construct a photo, I use my interactions, my listening, my immersions to think of ways to challenge myself artistically. Who I am as an artist is someone who takes it day by day - and as I grow emotionally + intellectually, my own art follow and that growth is reflected in my craft.
About
Teala Avery
Teala Avery is a photographer from Norwich, CT. Teala has followed her passion for photography to Spelman College, where she will be graduating from this Spring with a BA in Photography. Teala's main subjects consist of people, specifically friends, family and herself. With elements of constructed and documentary photography, she is interested in expanding her subject matter to environmental landscape and still lives to create different narratives. She says, "In the curation of my work, there is a particular emphasis on the creation process in all its vulnerabilities, inherent curiosities, and excitements. When I'm photographing - I step into each shoot challenging myself. One of the main tools I use to challenge myself is the body. In facial expression, nudity, and allowing the skin to function as a landscape, I am actively trying to see what things make me uncomfortable, fearful, nervous, happy. Right now, I am photographing for myself, the people in front of me, and those I am bound to connect with in the future."
